W przeciągu trzech miesięcy, w odstępach czasowych, rejestrowałem jedenaście domen w hostnine.com i przypisywałem je do jednego konta hostingowego hostnine.com usytuowanego w UK.

Recently, as many of you are aware, HostNine had some major issues with its DNS cluster which currently services over 200,000 domain names for our shared and reseller accounts. These issues greatly affected many of our clients negatively and i would like to apologize for for the recent incidents, explain what went wrong, and how we resolved it. Lately we have put forth a large effort to improve the quality of our services and customer service experience and hope that being more transparent to you about the major events that happen at HostNine will help this further.

The base cause of the DNS cluster problems were the DNS servers not being powerful enough to handle the amount of traffic they were receiving, and simply could not keep up with the demand. After looking into multiple possible solutions, we made the decision to move our DNS cluster to our primary provider, SoftLayer, and upgrade the hardware on each of our DNS servers. We have been using SoftLayer for all of our US based servers for about a year and a half now and have had nothing but a great experience with their network and hardware quality, and plan to have a long relationship with them as HostNine grows in the years to come.

Our new DNS servers lightning fast and are able to handle the large number of read and write queries that these servers must handle on a daily basis without any issues. Additionally, we also added a third DNS server to the cluster for added redundancy. Each of these servers are located at a separate geographic location in the US (ns1 - Washington DC, ns2 - Dallas TX, and ns3 - Seattle Washington), which helps for you to receive faster DNS results with having a server closer to you. After several days of testing we are confident that these issues are now fully resolved.

As I'm sure you are wondering, since we moved the DNS cluster to a new provider this would mean a change in the IP addresses, right? Yes, that is correct. We have planned for this and the old IP addresses automatically and transparently forward to our new DNS servers at SoftLayer. Below are the new IPs that will be used for all future private nameservers. We aren't forcing you to move to these new IP addresses immediately, however we highly recommend you move to them as soon as possible. During this transition process the old IP addresses will remain online for at least 60 days to ensure all of you have plenty of time to make the switch. Rest assured that when you update your nameserver IPs you will not experience any downtime due to the transparent way our IPs are being forwarded. Your websites will remain online during this transition.

ns1.speedydns.net = 208.43.81.114

ns2.speedydns.net = 50.22.35.226

ns3.speedydns.net = 174.37.183.108

For our shared hosting customers, the IP addresses are the same however you would typically be using our branded nameservers as below:

ns7.hostnine.com

ns8.hostnine.com

ns9.hostnine.com

Below I've described the process for you to update the IP addresses on your domain. Note however that this only applies if you use private nameservers which utilize your own domain name (typically only those with reseller packages). If you currently use our 'speedydns.net' or 'hostnine.com' nameservers, there are no changes needed on your side except for adding the third new DNS server, if you have not yet done so already.

There are two basic steps to update the IP addresses for your private nameservers:

1. Update the IP address in your domain's DNS zone

2. Update your private nameserver with the new IP address at your domain registrar

To update the IP address in your domain's DNS zone (step one) perform the following:

1. Login to your cPanel account at HostNine

2. Click on the icon/link for "Simple DNS Zone Editor"

3. Select your domain from the dropdown list (if applicable)

4. Under the section "User-Defined Records" locate your private nameserver records

5. Delete the current "A" record for your private nameserver entry

6. Go to the section titled "Add an A Record" and enter your private nameserver in the "Name" field, and the respective IP in the "Address" field.

7. Click "Add a Record"

For step two from the first list, this is performed at the company where your domain name is registered with. Unfortunately we are unable to provide instructions on how to update your nameserver IP with 3rd party companies, so it is best to contact them directly for assistance. If your domain name is registered with HostNine however, simply open an email with our Support department detailing your private nameservers, and we will update the registered nameserver IPs for you. (Be sure to have first completed steps 1-7 above)

I hope that this letter has helped to better explain the recent DNS problems at HostNine. We also have some exciting changes that are already in progress to help improve our level of service we provide to you even further, however more information regarding this will be available in the upcoming weeks. In the mean time, I wish all of you a happy New Year and I expect 2011 to be the best year HostNine has ever had!
